The Personality Hire Who Turned Out to Be Competent

There’s a certain kind of compliment people give when they don’t quite know where to place you professionally.

“You’ve got great energy.”
“You’re such a people person.”
“You bring so much personality to the team.”

Which is lovely. And true. I do have excellent energy, thank you for noticing.

But there’s always been a small part of me that hears that and thinks …and?

Because somewhere along the way, “personality hire” became shorthand for someone who’s warm, funny, likable but maybe not the one you’d trust with the harder stuff. As if being personable and being competent are somehow opposing forces. As if charm and capability can’t coexist in the same broad-chested, emotionally literate package.

And I’ve always found that weird.

Because yes, I can hold a conversation. Yes, I can make people feel comfortable. Yes, I know how to read a room, defuse tension, and make awkward moments feel less awkward. Those things matter. A lot, actually.

But I can also do the job.

Quite well.

Warmth Isn’t Fluff

I think what people sometimes underestimate is how much skill sits underneath “personality.”

Being easy to work with is a skill.
Communicating clearly is a skill.
Building trust is a skill.
Making people feel heard, comfortable, and willing to engage, especially during change or uncertainty, is absolutely a skill.

It’s not decorative.
It’s functional.

And maybe because some of those skills are softer, or more relational, they get read as less serious. Less strategic. Less valuable than the louder, more obviously “professional” traits.

But in my experience, a lot of work gets done because of those things, not in spite of them.

Turns Out, I’m Not Just Here for Vibes

I’ve spent enough time in work now to know that I’m not just the person who makes things feel nicer. I’m also the person who notices things. Connects dots. Holds context. Sees the people side of problems and the operational side too.

I care about how things work.
I care about how people experience them.
And I care enough to want to improve both.

So yes, maybe I came in as “the personality hire.”
The one with good energy. The one who could build rapport. The one who seemed easy to talk to.

But over time, I’ve had the very satisfying experience of also turning out to be… competent.

Reliable.
Thoughtful.
Strategic.
Someone who can actually deliver.

Honestly, there’s something deeply enjoyable about being underestimated slightly and then quietly outperforming the expectation.

The Older I Get, the More I Value This

When I was younger, I probably felt more defensive about this. More eager to prove that I wasn’t just the warm one, or the funny one, or the one who could present well.

Now? I think I understand the power of that mix a bit better.

Because competence without warmth can feel cold.
And personality without substance can only carry you so far.

But both together?
That’s where things get interesting.

That’s where trust lives.
That’s where influence lives.
That’s where people actually want to work with you.

And maybe that’s what I’ve grown into professionally, someone who can bring both.

So yes, maybe I was the personality hire.

But jokes on everyone, because I turned out to be competent too.

Warm, capable, and good in a meeting?
That’s not a contradiction.
That’s range.
